About Us
The Channel’s Mission
is to cultivate deep, safe, spiritual spaces where people can get to what they need.
Our Vision:
To create a faith community, safe for those who have experienced spiritual harm or abuse. This community will be rooted in spiritual friendships, Christian contemplative practice, and social action, and will exist across a network of digital and in person spaces, curated to provide multiple points of access, and reduce obstacles to Christian formation and witness.
Core Values:
Love Everyone
• Inclusivity and Diversity make us stronger
• LGBTQ+ Affirming and Inclusive
• Disability Justice
Organize Relationally
Flow in Contemplative Practices
• Rest is resistance. Contemplative activities slow down our rush and allow us to decide how we will love God by caring for ourselves, our neighbors, and the Earth.
Do Justice
• Healthy faith helps the world become more loving, just and generous
Remove Barriers
• Digital Spaces give access to everyone
• Ministry is collaborative – we are in it together
Think Deeply
• Committed to conversation and collaboration. None of us has all the right answers about faith.
• Our pattern is to love God with our minds by interpreting Scripture, theology, and ethics in community with each other and the Holy Spirit.
• Scripture is primary, but sound reason, personal experience and the witness of those who have been faithful to following Christ’s way of love also help us to contextualize faith, and serve the present age.
Who is the Channel?
- People who are looking for a different kind of spiritual experience, and who share the values of Progressive Christianity.
- People who have wanted to stay in the UMC but who had no church in their area after their congregation disaffiliated – this is a community that holds space for healing and growth.
- People who have been rejected because of their identity, or who have experienced other spiritual harm or trauma.
- People who are in the processes of deconstruction and reconstruction of their faith — this is a supportive community in which to explore faith in new ways.
- Young adults who are looking for spiritual connection/community
- People who want spiritual community, and need to fit that in around an already overloaded schedule— our digital network provides 24/7 interactive access
- People with disabilities – Zoom and Channel network options are supportive – no transportation is needed, captioning is available, and multiple modes of communication and interaction are offered.
- People with neurodivergence — our digital spaces are focused on mindful positive engagement, giving total control to those who need to manage stimulation
- People who feel conflicted about organized religion — but also see the benefits of the global care and justice initiatives that larger structures can offer.
